FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO
January 5, 2021
We recognize and apologize for any confusion and lack of communications about the Local Waste Contract. We were extremely fortunate with the previous 5-year contract with Local Waste to enjoy exceptional low rates due to the competitive bidding and negotiating by the consortium 5 years ago. That contract covered January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2020. In 2016 that low bid contract was negotiated for $15.03 per month. In 2017 SWACO reduced tipping fees and Local Waste passed that onto customers. Therefore in 2017 the cost dropped to $15.01 per month and again due to lower tipping fees in 2018 to 2020 it dropped to $13.92 per month.
The new 5-year contract, which reflects current tipping fees, has been awarded by the consortium to the lowest bid, which is Local Waste at $19.39 per month. Recycling has always been included in that price. The new blue recycle carts have nothing to do with the trash hauling contract. SWACO obtained grant money to offer the recycle carts to townships, cities, and villages in the area. The carts normally cost $45 each. SWACO offered them for $5 each to be paid interest-free over 3 years. The township purchased them, and the township owns and maintains them.
As for communications, this has been a particularly challenging year for all of us in our respective jobs and all the entities dealing with the township due to Covid-19 meeting restrictions. Today we received a very good suggestion from a township resident. He suggested that since not everyone has the time to attend meetings and not everyone receives the Messenger why not post the highlights of the meeting the day after to social media. So, look for Meeting Highlights Wednesday, January 13th after the next meeting held on January 12, 2021 which will be starting a half an hour early for reorganization at 6:30 p.m. We welcome your input as our goal is to serve you in the best way possible and to keep you all informed.
Sincerely,
Pleasant Township Trustees
